RC Strasbourg have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino on loan in a late January move, effectively ending any chance of the 20-year-old returning to Borussia Dortmund this season.
The centre-back, who was recalled early from his loan spell at Dortmund due to Chelsea’s defensive concerns, is now set to continue his development in Ligue 1 for the remainder of the 2025–26 campaign.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Strasbourg are now clear favourites to complete the loan deal, with no possibility of Anselmino heading back to Dortmund. The German club had hinted at keeping the defender beyond January, but Chelsea were unwilling to agree to that scenario.
Chelsea triggered a recall clause earlier this month as injury issues mounted at Stamford Bridge, bringing Anselmino back from the Bundesliga before reassessing his short-term future.
Dortmund were left frustrated by the decision, having handed the Argentine defender ten appearances in all competitions, during which he also scored once.
A move to Strasbourg offers Anselmino the chance to secure regular first-team football while continuing his development in a competitive environment. The deal also reinforces the growing working relationship between Chelsea and their French affiliate club.
For Strasbourg, the loan provides a timely defensive boost, while Chelsea retain close oversight of one of their emerging talents.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also considering recalling Mamadou Sarr from his current loan at Strasbourg during the final stages of the January window, underlining ongoing squad adjustments under head coach Liam Rosenior.
Although discussions remain ongoing, the potential move highlights Chelsea’s efforts to reshape their defensive options before the transfer deadline closes.
