Path of Exile is renowned for its intricate gameplay, and while progressing through the campaign may seem manageable, the true challenge lies in the endgame. Here, players must navigate a complex web of negative resistances, formidable enemies, and diverse in-game mechanics, all while deciphering the enigmatic Atlas passive tree.
At its core, completing a map in Path of Exile involves entering the map, defeating all enemies, and ultimately taking down the boss. However, the Atlas system is far more nuanced, and mastering it is essential to progressing through maps across various tiers. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the correct approach to mapping, helping players to optimize their gameplay and progress through the Atlas.
3 Essential Steps to Master Endgame Mapping in Path of Exile
Most beginner builds in Path of Exile are designed to facilitate rapid completion of the campaign and initiation of currency generation across maps. Many new players assume that they will start accumulating currency as soon as they reach the endgame. Nevertheless, these builds are not intended to yield substantial currency, even in higher-tier maps.
To succeed in endgame mapping, players must invest time in setting up the Atlas tree, a process that, although time-consuming, is ultimately rewarding. The following steps outline the necessary actions to progress through the Atlas and access high-tier maps in Path of Exile.
1) Enhancing Defensive Capabilities
Maximizing elemental resistances is crucial to improving survivability. Players should aim to achieve at least 75% resistance to Fire, Cold, and Lightning, while also attempting to restore Chaos resistance to positive values. This can be accomplished by collecting and identifying ground loot or, if possible, acquiring double resistance armor from the in-game market using Chaos orbs.
As long as both resistances are above 35% and the gear aligns with the player’s chosen defense mechanism (Evasion, Armor, or Energy Shield), they should be able to navigate white maps with ease. For instance, players using an Evasion-based build should focus on acquiring resistances on gear that primarily enhances Evasion.
2) Acquiring Atlas Passives in Path of Exile
In addition to seeking gear, players should also prioritize completing map objectives. Each node on the map device presents specific conditions, such as defeating the boss using a Magic (blue) map for low-tier maps (T1 to T5) or a Rare map for mid-tier areas (T6 to T10).
Completing these objectives rewards players with Atlas passive skill points, which enable them to influence maps and target specific mechanics. By completing objectives, players can acquire around 40-50 points without relying on high-tier maps (T11 to T16), which require corrupted rare variants.
3) Optimizing the Atlas Tree for Currency Generation
The Atlas passive points allow players to restrict unwanted mechanics, making it easier to navigate maps. For example, players who wish to avoid Mirrors of Delirium can invest in Ominus Silence to remove them entirely. By removing multiple mechanics, players can narrow down the types of encounters they will face, ensuring that they are well-suited to their build.
Investing around 30-40 points in the Atlas tree yields noticeable results in loot quality. Although players may not always receive the desired items, they can trade them for currency and acquire gear to enhance their build. It is essential to focus on one or two mechanics, as dividing attention across multiple mechanics can be counterproductive.
Recommended farming strategies include:
- Strongboxes: Ideal for generating raw currency and Divination cards, particularly when combined with Backup Cache and Vault of Mysteries nodes.
- Essences: Enable players to reroll gear stats or exchange them at the Currency Market in Path of Exile.
- Blight: Silver, Gold, Tainted, and other oils can be sold for substantial amounts of Chaos and are useful for anoints.
- Current mechanics (Mirage): The League mechanics introduced in the update will be present across all maps, making them a worthwhile target for farming, especially in Path of Exile 3.28.
By following this strategy, players should be able to accumulate significant currency, equivalent to a Divine, within two or three maps. This, in turn, will provide them with the necessary gear to access high-tier maps, such as T16s. To further enhance loot quality, players can utilize Scarabs, such as Ambush or Essence Scarabs, when running Strongboxes or Essences.
