Napoli’s global business development officer Leonardo Giammarioli has acknowledged the club may only be a stop on Scott McTominay’s upward career path.

The former Manchester United midfielder was named Serie A Player of the Season last term after playing a central role in Napoli’s Scudetto success.

Giammarioli accepts the club understands McTominay has the quality to move on to an even bigger platform and believes it is only a question of timing.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “Of course there is concern.

“But Scott deserves to continue developing. Maybe it will not happen now or next season, but when the right chance arrives, he will have earned it.”

He continued: “Italian clubs face real challenges. The league is still struggling to increase revenue.

“We are working to grow and stay competitive, but holding on to top players is not simple.

“It was difficult to attract someone like McTominay in the first place, and keeping players of that level is even tougher. Every transfer decision has to be calculated.”
