Newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has committed to fostering the deep-rooted culture already present at Stamford Bridge, emphasizing that players must prioritize the collective over themselves.
The former Spanish international officially commenced his role as head coach for the Blues on Thursday, having inked a four-year agreement with the club.
Alonso joins the West London outfit boasting an impressive coaching resume, having previously held positions at Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
“In my view, there are fundamental rules in football that are not up for negotiation,” he explained during an internal interview.
“You have to be prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to compete at the elite level. Nothing can be held back.
“You must provide everything in your power for the team’s benefit. The collective must always come before the individual.”
Throughout his tenure in Germany, he steered Leverkusen to their inaugural Bundesliga championship, a feat that solidified his status as one of the most promising young coaches in Europe.
“We need to cultivate that spirit, which is a gradual process—a process that happens every single day at Cobham, training consistently to ensure we are ready to perform for our supporters,” he added.
“I believe a solid foundation already exists here. There is an essential core to this squad, and the more experienced players who have cemented their places over the years need to mentor the younger ones.
“This is achieved through their professionalism, their dedication, and an understanding that the team is paramount. Day in and day out, we will be able to foster that mindset and nurture that culture.
“The environment we create here will, without a doubt, be reflected on the pitch at Stamford Bridge.”
