Manchester United could receive a timely boost in midfield this week, with Mason Mount edging closer to a return from injury, according to head coach Michael Carrick.
Speaking ahead of United’s upcoming fixtures, Carrick confirmed the England international is unlikely to feature in Tuesday’s match but is firmly on track to be available for the weekend clash against Everton.
“Mason Mount is probably not fit for Tuesday but definitely going into the Everton game, he’ll be back,” Carrick said.
Mount’s potential return would come as welcome news for United, who have struggled for consistency and creativity in recent weeks. Since arriving at Old Trafford, the former Chelsea midfielder has endured a stop-start spell due to fitness issues, but the club remains confident he can still play a key role this season.
There is less certainty, however, surrounding Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch defender is progressing in his recovery, but Carrick stopped short of giving a firm return date.
“For Matthijs De Ligt, we’ll see how he develops. He’s moving in the right direction, but Mason’s a little bit closer than him,” he added.
