Manchester City defender Marc Guehi has admitted he was left puzzled by the hostile reception he received from Liverpool supporters during City’s 2–1 comeback victory at Anfield.
The England centre-back was booed consistently throughout the match, despite playing a key role as goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland sealed a late turnaround for Pep Guardiola’s side.
The reaction from the home crowd appeared to stem from last summer’s transfer saga, when Guehi was close to joining Liverpool before Crystal Palace pulled the plug on the deal in the final hours of the transfer window. With the move collapsing beyond the player’s control, Guehi nonetheless became a target for frustration among sections of the Anfield crowd.
Speaking after the match, the City defender made it clear the boos caught him by surprise.
“Yeah, I’m not sure why, to be honest,” Guehi said.
“But I can’t control what their fans think of me. I’m just grateful to our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game.”
Guehi also highlighted the mental demands of playing in such an intense atmosphere, particularly against Liverpool’s high-pressing style.
“It’s not easy. Fans are on top of you,” he added.
“You play against a team that likes to press high, but it’s always about the next action. You might make a mistake, but the next one. Always focused on the next action and how you can help your teammates.”
City ultimately had the last word on the night, leaving Anfield with all three points — and Guehi, despite the jeers, left with a composed performance and a reminder that football crowds have long memories, even when the facts tell a different story.
