Roberto Carlos has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to continue his career for as long as possible, insisting the Portuguese superstar still has the hunger, fitness and influence to perform at the highest level.
Speaking to O Jogo, the former Brazil and Real Madrid left-back praised Ronaldo’s relentless drive and dismissed any notion of retirement, despite the forward now being at an age when most players have long hung up their boots.
“Cristiano must never stop. If he ever decides to retire, I’ll call him and tell him not to,” Roberto Carlos said.
“He represents so much — for clubs, for the national team and for children starting out.”
The Brazilian legend went even further, highlighting Ronaldo’s inspirational value beyond footballing logic.
“Even if he played on one leg or crawled, he should keep going. He gives so much energy to the next generation.”
Ronaldo’s continued record-chasing also drew admiration, with Roberto Carlos convinced the Al-Nassr forward can still reach historic milestones.
“For those who love him and football, seeing him make history and break records is wonderful,” he added.
“Pelé scored 1,000 goals, but Cristiano can join that exclusive list. I see him happy and confident in the Saudi league, and I’m certain he’ll reach that milestone.”
Roberto Carlos also pointed to Ronaldo’s durability as a key factor in his longevity.
“He hardly ever gets injured and remains a role model for everyone.”
Looking ahead to international football, the former Brazil star entertained the idea of an unprecedented World Cup final between Portugal and Brazil — and did not rule out Ronaldo lifting the trophy.
“It would be beautiful. It’s never happened, but there’s always a first time,” he said.
“Portugal can beat anyone — they have a leader like Cristiano, a strong midfield and an excellent coach. Winning the World Cup needs hard work and a bit of luck, and with those ingredients, they are among the favourites.”
At 40, Ronaldo continues to defy football’s natural order. And if Roberto Carlos has his way, retirement remains nowhere in sight.
