Roberto De Zerbi has left Marseille by mutual consent, the Ligue 1 club confirmed early Wednesday, just days after a heavy 5-0 defeat to rivals Paris Saint-Germain intensified pressure on the Italian coach.
The 46-year-old, who took charge in the summer of 2024, exits amid growing speculation over his future and reported interest from Premier League clubs. Marseille were eliminated from the Champions League last month and Sunday’s emphatic loss in Paris left them fourth in the league standings.
In an official statement, the club said: “Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club’s management — the owner, president, director of football and coach — it was decided to make a change at the head of the first team.
“This was a difficult collective decision, taken after careful consideration in the best interests of the club, in order to respond to the sporting challenges of the end of the season.”
De Zerbi guided Marseille to a second-place finish behind PSG last season. Prior to his move to southern France, he enjoyed a successful two-year spell at Brighton, leading the English side to sixth place in his first campaign. He had previously managed Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.
