Liverpool are weighing up a potential move for Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida as the transfer window edges towards its deadline.

The 25-year-old is comfortable operating at right-back or centre-back and is well known to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot from their successful time together at Feyenoord.

Geertruida has been on Liverpool’s radar before, particularly after he struggled for consistent minutes following his £17 million move from Feyenoord to RB Leipzig last season. The Netherlands international was keen for regular football and has since rebuilt momentum.

Any deal is regarded as difficult at this stage, with the window closing tomorrow. The structure of the current loan, Sunderland’s need to line up a replacement and the tight timeframe all complicate matters, although discussions are ongoing.

Geertruida has made 17 Premier League appearances this season.

Liverpool’s interest is not new. Daily Mail Sport reported last May that the Reds were tracking the defender before ultimately opting to sign Jeremie Frimpong, while Conor Bradley continued to impress.

Geertruida was close to joining Marseille on deadline day before Sunderland intervened, agreeing a £2.1 million loan deal that includes an option to buy for £21 million.

He is not the only defensive option Liverpool are assessing as Slot looks to strengthen his back line ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline.

Geertruida was a key figure under Slot during their trophy-winning spell at Feyenoord, where his tactical intelligence and reliability stood out.

The defender is also capable of stepping into midfield, often operating as an extra body in central areas, a role he performed effectively in the Eredivisie.
