The Premier League have explained the decision to overturn Manchester United’s penalty against Fulham following a VAR review at Old Trafford, a call that ultimately worked in the hosts’ favour.
The incident came inside the opening 20 minutes when Matheus Cunha went to ground under a challenge from Fulham defender Jorge Cuenca. Referee John Brooks initially pointed to the spot, awarding United a penalty.
VAR intervened moments later, however, after replays showed Cuenca made contact with the ball before Cunha fell inside the area. After reviewing the footage, Brooks reversed his decision, ruling that the foul occurred outside the box, with Cuenca judged to have pulled Cunha’s shirt.
United were instead awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Bruno Fernandes swung the ball into the box and Casemiro powered home a header to put the Red Devils in front. Fulham manager Marco Silva was booked for his protests on the touchline.
The win maintained Manchester United’s perfect start under interim manager Michael Carrick, making it three victories from three matches.
Despite demonstrations by supporters outside Old Trafford aimed at the club’s ownership, United remained composed on the pitch, taking the lead early and sustaining their momentum in the Premier League.
