Bayern Munich’s trip to Werder Bremen’s Weserstadion could hardly arrive at a worse moment for the struggling hosts, who have been pulled into a Bundesliga relegation scrap.
After 21 matches, Bremen occupy 16th place — the relegation play-off spot — sitting behind Mainz in 15th only on goal difference.
It marks a sobering chapter for the four-time German champions, the only side alongside Bayern to have spent 61 seasons in the Bundesliga era’s top flight.
Known for Beck’s beer and its historic market square, Bremen may not rank among Germany’s biggest or wealthiest cities, yet Werder retain a broad and loyal fanbase.
League and cup double winners in 2004 and Europa League finalists in 2009, Bremen’s downturn mirrors that of once-mighty clubs such as Hamburg, Schalke and Hertha Berlin — traditional institutions slow to adapt and drifting into self-inflicted crises.
Ahead of the campaign, Bremen dismissed coach Ole Werner following a contractual disagreement, despite his role in guiding them back to the Bundesliga and restoring stability.
There was internal criticism of Werner for not giving more opportunities to Bremen-born forward Nick Woltemade, who left on a free transfer to Stuttgart before earning a lucrative move to Newcastle United.
A gamble on a season-long loan for Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has also backfired, with the injury-plagued Nigerian ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Werner’s successor, Horst Steffen, was dismissed in February, leaving Daniel Thioune with the task of steering the club clear of relegation.
Thioune attempted to lift morale after suffering defeat in his first game in charge against Freiburg on Saturday.
“The last thing I want to see is people dropping their heads,” Thioune said.
“Those who look down can’t see what lies ahead.
“I’ve told the players to believe in the path we’re taking and to trust me.”
The new coach vowed his side would “work hard and relentlessly to change our situation,” even with the league leaders next on the schedule.
“In football, you rise to the challenge.”
