France head coach Didier Deschamps has lauded attacker Kylian Mbappe following his eighth goal of the tournament, which propelled Les Bleus into the World Cup semi-finals on Thursday.
Mbappe netted midway through the second half against Morocco after an earlier penalty miss, while Ousmane Dembélé also contributed to the effort as France secured a place in the final four for the third consecutive tournament.
“When it comes to Kylian, there are no issues—he never loses faith in himself, despite having another opportunity prior to finding the net,” Deschamps remarked.
“Securing three semi-finals in a row is a significant achievement,” he continued.
“It might look straightforward, but you still have to go out and do it. Naturally, I possess exceptional talent on this squad, otherwise we wouldn’t have made it this far, but it’s a positive result. It was a difficult match because, after the penalty miss and the subsequent chances we created, we failed to capitalize.”
France is now set to compete against either Spain or Belgium for a spot in the World Cup final.
“We are exactly where we aimed to be; we will focus on our recovery and wait to see who we face next,” Deschamps stated.
He also noted that Mbappé was replaced late in the game after sustaining a blow to his ankle; the forward was observed applying ice to the area while on the bench.
