Morocco is advancing to the World Cup round of 16 to face Canada following a grueling, nearly three-hour encounter that culminated in a chaotic 3-2 penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands. Ismael Saibari confidently converted the decisive spot-kick after a tense shootout marred by two misses from each side. The critical turning point arrived when Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou stood his ground to deny Crysencio Summerville, echoing his penalty heroics from the 2022 tournament and setting the stage for Saibari to seal the win.
The North African side was thoroughly deserving of the result against a largely defensive Dutch setup, though they had to wait until late in regulation to force extra time through a headed equalizer from center-back Issa Diop. Earlier in the second half, the Netherlands had taken the lead under deeply emotional circumstances. In the 72nd minute, Cody Gakpo—playing despite the tragic recent loss of his unborn son—hammered home a powerful finish. Visibly overcome with emotion, Gakpo pointed to the sky in celebration before being embraced and comforted by teammate Denzel Dumfries.
Entering the knockout fixture, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman opted for a pragmatic tactical shift, abandoning his traditional 4-3-3 formation in favor of three center-backs while dropping midfielder Tijjani Reijnders to deny Morocco space. The Monterrey Stadium crowd, however, was firmly against the European side. A strong contingent of local Mexican fans, holding lingering frustrations from their 2014 World Cup elimination by the Dutch, heavily booed the Netherlands’ touches and backed the Moroccan squad.
Following a cautious opening 20 minutes, Morocco intensified the pressure in the sweltering heat. Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was repeatedly called into action, producing spectacular saves to deny Neil El Aynaoui’s near-post header and a blistering drive from Achraf Hakimi. The high stakes also fueled a highly physical and irritable undercurrent throughout the first half, primarily involving Jan Paul van Hecke, who required medical attention for a bleeding scalp following a heavy collision with Noussair Mazraoui.
Morocco maintained their aggressive tempo immediately after the interval, with 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi firing over and Hakimi rattling the crossbar following a smart run. Despite being firmly second best for most of the night, the Netherlands found their breakthrough via a direct route. Substitute Wout Weghorst flicked on a long clearance from Verbruggen, allowing Summerville to battle through two defenders and hook the ball across to Gakpo for his emphatic finish.
Refusing to concede defeat, Morocco’s resilience paid off when substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered an exquisite cross for Diop to flash a header past Verbruggen, sending the match into extra time. While Verbruggen miraculously denied Soufiane Rahimi in a circumspect additional period, the match inevitably proceeded to the dramatic shootout, where Bounou’s steady nerves and Saibari’s clinical final strike ultimately cemented Morocco’s progression.
